We know how important your smartphone is to you. It's how you work, navigate, and stay in touch with your friends and family. So, when your phone screen cracks, it can seem like the end of the world- but don't panic! Our staff here at Cricket Wireless has some tips to get that phone screen pristine again in no time!

Son of a….I got a cracked phone screen. Now what do I do?

Unsightly as it is, a cracked screen doesn't have to be the beginning of the end of your device. Stay calm and follow these steps.

  1. Protect yourself!
While you want to protect your phone, don't forget to protect yourself! Don't swipe with your bare fingers-you could get cut by shards of glass. Apply packing tape or a screen protector as a temporary fix, and that should get you to the next step.

  2. Back That Phone Up
Even if your phone still seems functional, you should back up your phone immediately. A cracked screen can spread unexpectedly (dead pixels, touch failure, full blackout), and backing up protects your photos, messages, contacts, and app data
  3. Asses The Damage
If the screen is swelling, very hot, or the phone smells odd, stop using it (battery risk) and get it inspected ASAP.
  4. Don’t Make it Worse!
Don't touch the cracked area, it may cause the crack to spread. It's even more crucial you keep your phone dry; moisture can slip through the cracks and permanently damage your phone.

How do I repair my phone?

Don’t despair – repair! If your phone needs repair, weigh the risks vs. rewards and find the best course of action for you.  We’re here with a few tips to help. Consider these options:

  • Manufacturer/authorized repair: This is your best bet for quality and a dependable repair but can be costly and it could be a longer wait.
  • Local shop: You know a guy? Local repair shops can be a lower cost option with shorter turnaround times. Consider a reputable specialist near you.
  • Do it yourself (but we'd prefer you didn't.) We generally don't recommend this as an option, unless you have experience in smartphone repair. Today’s smartphones are complicated and damage easily and you should only trust a professional.
  • Replace your phone: Finally, if all these other options have been exhausted, you may need to replace your device. If the damage turns out to be more extensive than just the phone screen – say the battery or frame is damaged – the repair cost could be close to the value of a new device. In which case, you may need a new device. Check with your carrier to see if a credit or upgrade is an option.

What’s the best way to avoid a cracked phone screen?

While there are a few options to consider if your phone screen is cracked, the best way to repair a cracked phone screen is to avoid an accident in the first place. While you can’t prevent every mishap, here are some tips to reduce the risk and limit damage of common smartphone accidents before they happen.

Organize and Accessorize
So, you've got a shiny new smartphone, with its out-of-the-box store fresh glow and not a single crack or blemish - let's keep it that way! These accessories are essential to prolonging your screen's appearance and lifespan.
  • A Tempered Glass Phone Screen Protector
This is your first line of defense! These protectors absorb shocks and scratches, acting as a shield for your phone's display
  • Choose a Tough, Shockproof Cases
Go for cases with raised edges or military-grade protection. The right case can lessen the impact if or when you drop your phone.

Stick to your clean screen routine

Cleaning your phone screen regularly does more than just restore your phone's shine, it eliminates dirt and tiny particles that can scratch your phone screen over time.  Use a microfiber cloth that's safe for your phone screen. Avoid paper towels, window cleaner or harsh chemicals, even if you have a phone screen protector.

A perfect phone screen begins at home

Here’s a few simple habits you can do around the house that can keep your smartphone out of imminent danger.

  • Avoid the Back Pocket Trap
Sitting down with your phone in your back pocket is a recipe for cracks. Your front pockets are there for a reason - use them!
  • Use Padded Compartments in Bags or Purses
Store your phone separately in a cushioned area to avoid scratches and phone screen pressure. Avoid loosely packing it in backpacks or purses where contents can shift and collide with other items.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures
Extreme heat or cold can weaken your screen and make it more susceptible to cracks. Keep your phone at moderate temperatures for longer-lasting protection. Avoid leaving your phone in direct sunlight, on the windowsill, at the pool or beach. In the winter, avoid leaving your phone overnight in your car, or any outdoor activity like skiing, snowboarding or sledding.
  • Look out for that that cord!
Beware of charging your phone with a long cord! Your phone can be yanked down by the cord and onto the floor. Don't charge your phone on high countertops, avoid long unwrapped cords and don't charge in an area with high pedestrian traffic. More importantly, you can trip over that cord and hurt yourself! Place your phone on a docking station when it needs to be recharged or make sure your phone is plugged in with the cord secure and out of the way.

Should I consider phone insurance or a protection plans?

Phone protection plans and insurance may cover repairs to your phone screen. Check to see what options your carrier offers.

  • If you have phone insurance, find out specifically what is and what is not covered.
  • Make sure you check to see if your phone screen is covered before you have an accident.
  • Cricket customers can add Cricket Protect to any monthly unlimited plan.

Don’t crack up!

Cracked screens are frustrating, but they don't have to be a catastrophe. Take a few preventative steps (protector, sturdy case, smart storage), and if a crack does happen, focus on safety first, back up your data right away, and decide whether a claim or repair makes the most sense for you. With a little preparation and quick action, you'll be back to scrolling, texting, and streaming with confidence-no panic required.
