Update: September 2, 2021

Our wireless network in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama continues to improve and is currently operating at more than 98 percent of normal. We are dedicated to our restoration efforts and will continue to work around the clock until service is restored.

As the remnants of Ida make their final run along the northeast coast, our teams are also monitoring Ida’s storm path in the northeast and any severe weather impacts. We will continue to focus on restoring service to areas that were hit hardest by the storm.


Update: August 31, 2021

We continue to make progress with our recovery and restoration efforts in areas impacted by Hurricane Ida. As of this morning, our wireless network in Louisiana is operating at more than 85 percent of normal. In addition, our wireless network in Alabama is operating normally and Mississippi is experiencing minimal impacts to wireless service. We will continue to make repairs as quickly and safely as possible in order to keep our customers connected.

To aid in the recovery efforts, we have 13 mobile satellite cell towers on air and have additional assets on the way to areas impacted by the storm.

We’ve made significant progress with restoration efforts and as of this afternoon much of our wireless network in Louisiana is operating normally. Our teams have been able to navigate storm damage to gain access to our network locations and we continue to deploy additional resources to assist with the recovery. We have additional generators in the region and are deploying them as needed. Commercial power may not be restored soon, and we are prepared to maintain and refuel generators until commercial power is restored.

We have several mobile satellite cell towers on air carrying traffic, we are in the process of deploying additional ones and have more going to the impacted areas.

Our wireless network in Mississippi has seen minimal impact and our network in Alabama is operating normally.

We appreciate Governor John Bel Edwards’ Homeland Security team and New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s ongoing help in facilitating our employees getting through to our locations that need to be restored.

Our local and national recovery/response teams are deploying a fleet of network recovery equipment in affected areas in the region, including:

  • Mobile cell sites and mobile command centers like Cell on Wheels (COWs) and Cell on Light Trucks (COLTs)
  • Emergency communications vehicles (ECVs)
  • Flying Cell on Wings (Flying COWs)
  • High water vehicles
  • Amphibious all-terrain vehicles
  • Drones
  • A self-sufficient base camp: This is complete with sleeping tents, bathrooms, kitchen, laundry facilities, an on-site nurse and meals ready to eat (MREs).
  • Hazmat equipment and supplies
  • Technology and support trailers to provide infrastructure support and mobile heating ventilation and air conditioning
  • Internal and external resources for initial assessment and recovery efforts
  • Hygiene kits with flashlights and chargers

We know our customers depend on us for their connection to what is important in their lives. Our employees are working 24/7 and we are using all the resources at our disposal to restore service in areas impacted by Hurricane Ida. We will provide additional updates as the recovery continues.

As Hurricane Ida pushes towards the Gulf Coast, Cricket is working hard to keep you connected.

We’re currently topping off generators at our cell sites with fuel and staging emergency response equipment and technicians in strategic locations, if needed. We’ve also improved network redundancy in storm-prone areas. In fact, prior to the storm season, more generators were installed at critical cell towers and switching facilities. In addition, electronics key to network operations were moved above expected flood levels.

The National Disaster Recovery team keeps service going until local network personnel, regional emergency operations centers and local response centers make permanent repairs.

To help prepare, Cricket encourages you to consider the following tips:

 

  • Save your smartphone’s battery life. In case of a power outage, extend your device’s battery life by putting it in power-save mode, turning off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, deleting apps, or putting your phone in Airplane Mode. This may prevent you from using certain features but will ultimately save battery power.
  • Keep your mobile devices charged. Be sure to have another way to charge your smartphone if the power goes out. A car charger or back-up battery pack can come in handy. If you have multiple devices to keep charged, consider a multi-port back-up battery pack.
  • Keep your mobile devices dry. Mobile phones can be a critical lifeline during a storm. To protect yours, store it in a water-resistant case, floating waterproof case or plastic bag.
  • Back up important information and protect vital documents. Back up insurance papers, medical information and the like to the cloud storage or your computer. With cloud storage, you can access your data from any connected device.
  • Have a family communications plan. Choose someone out of the area as a central contact in case your family is separated. Most importantly, practice your emergency plan in advance.
  • Store emergency contacts in your mobile phone. Numbers should include the police department, fire station, hospital, and family members.
  • Forward your home number to your mobile number in the event of an evacuation. Because call forwarding is based out of the telephone central office, you will get calls from your landline phone even if your local telephone service is down. If the central office is not operational, services like voicemail and call forwarding may be useful.
  • Track the storm on your mobile device. If you lose power at your home during a storm, you can use your mobile device to access local weather reports.
